Pınar Akpınar is Research Fellow and academic coordinator at POMEAS. She is also a scholar at the Conflict Resolution and Mediation Stream of Istanbul Policy Center (IPC). She is an adjunct lecturer at the program on African Studies and International Relations at Istanbul Commerce University. She received her Ph.D. in 2015 from the School of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy (SPIRE), Keele University with her dissertation entitled 'An emerging mediator on the periphery: Turkey's mediations in the Syrian-Israeli talks and in Somalia'.
Akpınar was lecturer at the Department of International Relations and Vice Director at Center for International Conflict Resolution, Yalova University between 2010 and 2014. She gave seminars on Conflict Resolution and Mediation to foreign junior diplomats between 2013 and 2014 at the Diplomatic Academy of Turkish Foreign Ministry, a program hosted by IPC.
Akpinar was a visiting scholar at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in 2013. She also gave training seminars on Conflict Resolution and Mediation at the Model Organization of Islamic Cooperation Conferences in 2012 and 2013. She was sessional tutor at Keele University, School of Politics, International Relations, and Philosophy (SPIRE) in 2012 and also coordinated Keele Seminars on Modern Turkey at SPIRE, a program sponsored by the Center for Strategic Research, Turkish Foreign Ministry. She was Vice Coordinator of the Intellectuals Forum at the 4th UN Conference on the LDCs in 2011. Prior to joining academia, Akpınar worked for a range of civil society organizations on areas of peace, democracy and environment.
Her research interests include conflict resolution, peacebuilding, international mediation, Turkish foreign policy and the Middle East. She is particularly interested in the use of mediation as a tool of foreign policy and the state-NGO interaction in peacebuilding.
Akpınar has authored several articles that have appeared in publications such as International Peacekeeping, Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies and Turkish Studies. She has also written a number of op-ed articles that have appeared in news media such as Al Jazeera and Hürriyet Daily News.
